Announcement : gentalk.biz

September 7, 2007

gentalk.biz is now live !

Please everyone who visits this blog – start to use the gentalk.biz address instead of the one that you currently use, change your bookmarks and RSS feeds - the feed will be http://gentalk.biz/blog/?feed=rss2 , or using feedburner, it’ll be http://www.feedburner.com/Ca-genWordsAndThoughts

Note that there will be no new posts added here – all new content will be added over at gentalk.biz - and from today (18th September 2007) the hit counter will be disabled in the old blog site, and will not be added to the new site.

The intention is that after the EDGE EMEA 2007 Conference in Ditton Park, London, 30th September -2nd October, this site will display a “closed”-type sign, and will be inactive, but will be there for historical viewing until (possibly Christmas 2007) at which point it will be decommissioned for good!

If any one should note any problems, or have any criticisms, or in fact, anything to say about the new site, please leave a comment at the gentalk.biz site.

Total Eclipse of Gen – possibly ?

September 5, 2007

Listening to the latest EDGE webcast, one of the things that will be in R8 of Gen is a move toward an Eclipse-based IDE.

It would be great if we could get into the Eclipse-based development community (see this post) and open Gen up to the world.

It seems that there is a DEFINITE move to the Eclipse-based toolset – the new Diagram Trace Facility is Eclipse-based, so the whole Gen toolset will eventually be Eclipse based.

Could it look like this ? (click to get a better view!)

EclipseMockUp

This is a mock-up by me, but maybe the shape of things to come. For a while, the Gen iterface has looked dated, and this could be the update it needs. In addition, the podcast talks about a potential re-architecting of the toolset – what more could this mean ? Could it be the start of a new life for the tool ? Hopefully CA are begining to invest more time and effort in it, and push it toward becoming the tool of choice. It has it all – a code repository, multi-database and platform support, mixed platform support – need I go on ?
